Somebody ought to do something …

There are many issues that concern Finchley where “somebody ought to do something”. In the past Spike Milligan, along with many other members of the Finchley Society, have indeed done something, and what they have achieved has made a real difference to Finchley.

Our April Outreach meeting gave us an opportunity to welcome other residents of Finchley who care about their environment and their community, and who may have a little spare time and energy to do something as well, by keeping an eye on the local environment and taking responsibility for preserving .their surroundings. Speakers included:

  • Jon Sheaff on our parks and open spaces
  • Jenny Brown on pot holes and pavements
  • Keith Martin on libraries
  • Mick Crick on communicating with our Council

Jon Sheaff is a landscape architect and public realm manager with over 25 years’ experience of designing and administering parks and public spaces. Jon’s practice has developed the new Parks and Open Spaces strategy for Barnet, which will be discussed by the Council’s Environment Committee at its May meeting. Jenny Brown is a member of the Finchley Society’s Environment and Transport Committee. A retired primary school teacher, she has lived in Finchley for many years. Keith Martin served as Chief Accountant at NALGO until his retirement in 1993. He founded Chaville Press, which has published eleven volumes since 2011, including The Friern Hospital Story by David Berguer and Keith’s own Friern Barnet – The Library that Refused to Close. Mick Crick was educated at Christ’s College Finchley before joining the Metropolitan Police. He retired after the Olympics in 2012. He lives in Friern Barnet and is the Society’s Publicity Officer.

The meeting took place in North Finchley on Thursday 28 April 2016 at Trinity Church hall, 15 Nether Street N12 7NN.
